A ‘unique flavour’ to Montgomery

05/07/2019 @ 10:31

We always knew there was a unique flavour to Montgomeryshire, and tomorrow you can taste it for yourself at the Montgomery Street Fair.

The annual gathering promises to bring together a colourful blend of local entertainment, crafts, food and drinks, but this year’s event will provide something unique.

A new type of apple has been discovered in Montgomery which can’t be found anywhere else in the world and, in typical Welsh fashion, it has been turned into cider!

It all started when the Welsh Heritage Orchard Project, which took place during 2017 and 2018, set out to identify rare apple and pear trees found in Wales.

Old Monty Cider submitted samples from four local trees which cider maker John Jenkins suspected were very rare. Three of these turned out to be unnamed rare varieties, but were also found elsewhere. One was unique, and found nowhere else.

The owners and discoverers were asked to submit names for the trees. The name for the tree which was found to be unique was accepted by the regulators. So Montgomery now has it very own local variety of apple named ‘Camlad’ after the river which flows nearby.

Old Monty Cider have produced a batch of single variety cider from this apple, and will have the first samples available for tasting at Montgomery Street Fair on Saturday.

“We hope people will come along to see us at the Street Fair for a taster of something unique and local,” said John.

The Montgomery Street Fair is free to enter but a donation can be made at the gate.

The food, drinks and craft stalls clear around 4.30pm and after a quick reshuffle, the evening entertainment commences in the Town Square.
