Blow to library hopes

Library protesters have been delivered another blow in their hopes of having the decision reversed to downgrade Welshpool Library.

Last night, Powys County Council’s Corporate Director for Economy and Environment, Nigel Brinn, said plans to co-locate the library and Powysland Museum would go ahead later this year after the Administrative Court in Wales rejected a renewed application for permission to apply for judicial review.

It will disappoint thousands of residents who signed a petition demanding the move to stop, and it seems likely now that it will go ahead later this year.

“We are pleased that the court accepted that the county council had acted correctly in consulting and reaching a decision in connection with proposals to co-locate the library and museum. The court’s decision will enable the Council to complete a wider review of office accommodation and buildings in the town,” said Mr Brinn.

“The co-location is an important part of the council’s wider plans for service delivery in Welshpool, it maintains library service in the town while freeing up office space which will be used to relocate staff from Neuadd Maldwyn.

“The closure of Neuadd Maldwyn, which could be completed by next spring, will also potentially allow for exciting plans for extra care provision to be developed in the town and see significant investment by the council and its partners ClwydAlyn.”
