Welshpool motorists are being warned of more street closures tonight and a possible delay to the return to two-way motoring on Union Street.
Diversions will be in place tonight from 8pm to 6am as Broad Street closes to allow the installation of a Zebra Crossing outside the Town Hall.
But the bad news is that work is on hold in Union Street after contractors unveiled an unmapped underground service. Engineers will be on site tomorrow (Thursday) to carry out a survey. It had been planned to open the road in both directions by the weekend.
Town Clerk Robert Robinson has issued the following statement.
For information: One Way System Update: Wednesday 24th July 2019:
The following works that will be taking place over the next 24 hours are listed below - Working around the system from Raven Square:
i) Brook Street, Union Street and Church Bank remain open.
ii) The works in Union Street continue. The area on the right opposite the Inglenook has ceased pending a survey of the services found in a different place than shown on the plan. This survey is being carried out tomorrow and a report on the effect of this can be given then.
iii) The works in Church Street and on the junction with Church Bank continue, it is hoped that Church Street works will be finished before the weekend allowing the 2 lanes of traffic to the lights to return.
iv) The traffic light phasing is not working properly and there are operatives on site today to assess and make adjustments. We are aware this has caused an issue to Berriew Street.
v) The works to one side of Broad Street (as you enter it) continue and when finished will move to the other side of the street.
vi) BROAD STREET WILL BE CLOSED this evening from 8pm - 6am overnight to allow the pedestrian crossing to be put in place close to the Town Hall. The diversion route will be signed so that those from Berriew Street will need to go via Severn Street to the station and bypass roundabout and go via Smithfield Road through the car park, up Church Bank and over Red Bank and around the Guilsfield Road.
vii) Works at the Jehu Road/High Street junction continue and should be completed before the weekend.
