The ‘mother’ of false alarms!

22/04/2011 @ 07:35

Four Crosses footballer Adam Griffin (right) will never forget his side’s shock 1-0 victory at Rhosgoch... but his girlfriend probably won’t want to be reminded!

The end of season fixture congestion has taken its toll on the Spar Club who travelled to the promotion chasers with the bare 11 last weekend.

But their numbers almost got a lot worse when Adam received a call 15 minutes into the journey to say his girlfriend, who is expecting their baby within the next four weeks, had been rushed to hospital.

It was the decision that no footballer ever wants to face, particularly as his side was already down to the bare bones.

Manager Nick Popyk takes up the story.

“Adam still made the rest of the journey as his girlfriend agreed he shouldn’t let the club down. He played the match with all this on his mind and even scored a first half header which turned out to be the winner!”

But the saga was to take one more dramatic twist. Adam ran straight from the pitch at the final whistle to set a desperate blaze back to Shrewsbury Hospital, still in his football kit. However, he got a further phone call en route to say it was a false alarm and the child was not ready yet!

“It was funny because we thought he was well on his way to hospital and then he walked back into the club in Rhosgoch still in his kit!” the boss added.

“Initially he said he would stay till half time. At half time he said ‘give me 10 more’ then he said ‘I’ll stay on and go as soon as the whistle goes’! It shows tremendous commitment to the club but not sure how his girlfriend felt about it!”
