It’s going to be a night of celebrating for many local students who made the grade in their A-levels.
The results were out today and were warmly welcomed by education chiefs, with 23.9% of Powys learners achieving the highest grades of A*- A, an increase of 3.8% on 2018, with more than 7% of results at grade A* and 16.5% at grade A.
At Welshpool High School, Head Teacher, Jim Toal, said: “It has been another strong year for A-level and BTEC results.
“Well over half the students gained three or more higher grades of A* - C, over 70% gained two or more higher grades of A* - C, and just under half of the students attained at least one or more of the very top grades of A*/A.
“Among the several high performing students, the most notable were Bobby Crosby with 2 A* and an A, and Jenna Foulkes with 4 As.
“I would like to congratulate all the students and wish them well as they move forward into the world of work, further training, and university, and thank the staff for supporting the students so ably during their studies.”
Llanfyllin High School reported an improvement in the percentage of A* and A grades with 100% of students passing with nearly half of the results being at grades A* to B and the majority at A* to C.
“There were outstanding individual performances including three students who achieved all A* and A grades,” said Head Teacher, Dewi Owen. “There were several excellent subject performances with Further Maths, Chemistry, Fine Art, Textiles, Photography and Theatre Studies achieving 100% A*- C grades.
“Our students also enjoyed great success in vocational subjects with 100% pass rate. In IT and Sport, 100% of students achieved a Merit grade or above with nine Distinction or Distinction star grades being awarded.
“It is very pleasing to see our students enjoy the reward of their hard work. We are very proud that our students achieve such good results with such consistency. This is due to a combination of factors: the fact that we are able to offer a wide curriculum in order to best meet students’ needs; the enthusiasm and commitment of our students; the hard work and dedication of our staff; and of course the support and encouragement of parents.”
The results across Powys brought praise from Councillor Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet Member for Learning and Welsh Language at Powys County Council, who said: “These strong results show that Powys schools are delivering for our learners. Partnerships between schools and families allow our young people to achieve the results they need to fulfil their ambitions.”
