Royal Wedding ‘gift’ for schools

27/04/2011 @ 04:18

Local teachers and pupils will be toasting the Royal Wedding just as much as anyone this long weekend, after being told they will have an extra day’s holiday this summer.

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday will be watched by two billion people worldwide and create an outpouring of nationalism not seen since the wedding of the Prince’s parents – Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

But Friday falls within the Easter break for local schools, meaning teachers and pupils could have been short changed on their annual holidays by a day with the Welsh Assembly Government declaring the day a Bank Holiday.

However, a spokesperson for Powys County Council confirmed this morning: "The school calendar for this academic year is to be amended as the bank holiday was included within the Easter Holiday.

"It has been agreed that the Summer Term will now end on Friday, July 15 rather than Monday July 18 and the non-pupil day designated for Monday, July 18 will now be moved to Friday, July 15. This means that the final date for pupils to attend school in Powys will be Thursday, July 14."
