Robert Robinson retires as Town Clerk of Welshpool

09/10/2019 @ 07:13

The mystery surrounding the future of Welshpool Town Clerk Robert Robinson is finally over with news that he has retired from his post.

Media speculation grew when it was discovered that the town clerk had not been at his desk since late August but requests from MyWelshpool for confirmation from the Town Council that he had been suspended fell on deaf ears.

But this morning the Town Council finally issued a statement that Mr Robinson, who had been Town Clerk since 2006, had retired.

Welshpool Town Council confirms the retirement of Town Clerk Robert Robinson from 1st October 2019 after 13 years’ service to the community.

Cllr Steve Kaye said: “The Council is grateful for the loyal service given by Robert over the years and wishes him all the best for the future in his retirement.”

Mr Robinson said: “I have enjoyed working with the councillors and staff of Welshpool Town Council and wish the council all the best as they progress into a new era.”

Mr Robinson was absent from the councils August meeting where his place was taken by a solicitor and the September meeting went ahead with former Oswestry Town Clerk David Preston acting as temporary clerk.

Last year it was announced that Mr Robinson would be reducing his commitment to the authority and a deputy town clerk was appointed. It is understood the deputy is no longer employed by the council.

The council added that the search has started for his successor.
