Welshpool set for a re-brand

01/05/2011 @ 08:40

Welshpool is to be known as a town in Montgomeryshire as opposed to Powys from now on, following a decision made by its Town Council to regain its local identity.
Since local government re-organisation in the mid-1990’s, Powys swallowed up the borough councils of Radnorshire, Breconshire and Montgomeryshire but Welshpool has decided to switch back.
While Town Clerk Robert Robinson explained that “it’s nothing against Powys, it is something that the town councilors have wished for”, it means Powys will be removed from its official address and replaced by Montgomeryshire, and all correspondence sent out will include the tag line: The Gateway to Mid Wales.
Mywelshpool understands that the move sends a stealth message to the Welsh Assembly and Powys County Council that Welshpool is not happy with the treatment it receives from its regional and national guardians, especially considering the horrific power plans they want to allow on the town's doorstep.
One councilor tipped us off on Friday that “Welshpool feels a little lost in the whole Powys concept but is one of only a couple of big towns when it comes to Montgomeryshire”.
The change to the council’s letterhead will be imminent and new ‘welcome’ signage into the town could be factored into the future.
“The council feels very strongly about Welshpool being recognised as the Gateway to Mid Wales so I would not rule out some sort of signage being done,” added Mr. Robinson.
What do you think? Has Welshpool got ‘lost’ since Montgomeryshire was swallowed up by Powys? Have your say on this story on our Facebook wall.
