Town won’t accept bum deal over toilets

Welshpool’s public toilets have been virtually saved weeks before drastic cuts could have flushed them down the pan.

Although not 100 per cent certain yet, the public conveniences next to the Tourist Information Centre and in the Co-operative Car Park will probably be managed in future by the Town Council who will take them off the hands of Powys County Council.

It is good news for the town which is negotiating with Powys over financial aspects of the handover as the toilets are thought to currently cost the tax payer in the region of £20,000 a year to run.

“Subject to a proposal being accepted, Welshpool will retain this important service,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson.”They are not going to close.”

Powys needs to slice its annual expenditure to meet a reduced budget and services like toilets, libraries and tourist information centres (TIC) are under scrutiny. However, Welshpool took over the running of its TIC last year and it now appears that its toilets will follow suit.

The TIC, meanwhile, is set to report better-than-expected second year figures which should yield £2,000 more than projected.
