Looking for local lifesavers

12/11/2019 @ 07:42

The local ambulance service is urgently looking for volunteer lifesavers who can operate in the Welshpool and Llanfyllin areas.

New Community First Responders (CFR) are required for both areas with the deadline of November 19 fast approaching.

“Please note that you don’t need any previous medical experience as all training is provided,” said a spokesperson. Anyone interested is advised to visit ://www.ambulance.wales.nhs.uk/en/73#!/job/UK/Denbighshire/Powys/Welsh_Ambulance_Service_NHS_Trust/Volunteer/Volunteer-v2102756?_ts=153274  for more information.

Volunteers are trained by the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust to administer basic first aid skills, oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator.

“When a patient faces a serious emergency, every second counts for them and a simple helping hand from a CFR can make a vital difference to their lives,” said the spokesperson.

“CFRs in Wales are volunteers who donate their spare time to attend appropriate 999 calls and provide first hand emergency care to people in their own community.

“When a 999 call is made, our CFR's are alerted to an Emergency call via a handheld mobile device from one of our three Regional Ambulance Control Centres. Our volunteers will drive to the address of the incident, under normal road conditions, and will adhere to the Highway Code at all times. Our volunteers will not be permitted to drive under Emergency Conditions e.g. Blue Lights.”

The CFR training course will be held over five days from late January, and all five must be attended. All new volunteers are subject to an ID check, an enhanced DBS check, occupational health clearance and two character references.

Each new learner will also be given access to online learning materials, which must be completed prior to the commencement of the course.
