Tree-mendous initiative for town

16/11/2019 @ 02:55

Welshpool Town Council is proving that it is about action, and not just words, after declaring a climate emergency earlier this year.

The town will be planting 750 trees during National Tree Week from November 23, and will be co-ordinating its efforts with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, local schools, groups and residents.

The trees have been donated by the Woodland Trust on condition that they will be planted in public spaces, so the Town Council is currently assessing the land it owns.

“The first stage will be planting these small trees around some of our green spaces and we’re all very keen that as many people as possible join in,” said a spokesperson. “The planned activity days are Tuesday, November 26, and Saturday, November 30.

“We’ll be pleased to help young people under 12 plant their trees but ask that they are accompanied by an adult.”

The Town Council said that it will be consulting residents after Christmas on more action to be undertaken, pointing out that the new wider pavements and changes to the traffic system have opened up more opportunities. Wildflower seeds will be spread across several locations and spring bulbs will also be planted.

“We’re looking to create ‘pollinator plots’ wherever appropriate so look carefully at the green spaces near you.”
