Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday 2nd May 2011.
 
OTMS (57)
An entry of 42 cows average 126ppkg, 4 bulls to average 137ppkg, 10 under 48 month old heifers to average 137ppkg and 1 under 48 month old steer sold to 136ppkg. G Jones & Son Yr Ogof sold a British Blue cow weighing 865kg to £1288.85 per head. JG & SE Robinson Cefndu sold a Limousin cow to £1279.55. DS & GM Pryce & Sons Coedmawr sold a Charolais Bull to £1582.20 per head. G Jones & Son Yr Ogof receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day.
 
FATCATTLE (22)
An entry of 22 fat cattle presented for sale saw heifers averaging 175ppkg and steers averaging 169ppkg. G Bound & Son Cefn Bach presented three heifers to sell well at 193ppkg, 188ppkg and 181ppkg which where all bought by M J Birtwistle & Co. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf sold a steer to 187ppkg and three heifers to 185ppkg, 180ppkg and 173ppkg. J C Evans & Co Belan Newydd presented eight fat cattle to a top price of 178ppkg. G Bound & Son Cefn Bach receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price animal sold on the day.
 
PRIME LAMBS (1727)
An entry of 1727 spring lambs, selling to an average of 263ppkg.
Lights (33) to 282ppkg from DL & LE Davies Ty Bach y Ffrodd. Others to 280ppkg from J E Bennett Goppas. Average of 275ppkg.
Standards (857) to 282ppkg from BE & BE Langford Lletymeibion, G & JL Pritchard Penysarn and J L Rowlands & Son Lower Garth. Others to 279ppkg from CJ & ME Williams Minysarn. Average of 262ppkg.
Mediums (799) to 290ppkg from T C Evans Caegwyn. Others to 286ppkg from A E Casewell Bodynfoel. Average of 261ppkg.
Heavy’s (27) to 254ppkg from H G Ellis & Co Tynywern. Others to 246ppkg from LA & SM Lloyd Severn House and R A Owen Tynewydd. Average of 251ppkg.
Over Weights to 223ppkg from W Davies Red House. Average of 217ppkg.

An entry of 3880 Prime Hoggets, selling to an average of 231ppkg.    
Lights (117) to 232ppkg from T J Thomas & Co Nantygasseg. Others to 221ppkg from S Beamond Dolhafren. Average of 211ppkg.
Standards (433) to 246ppkg from J Jerman Cloddiau. Others to 236ppkg from Home Farm Produce Ltd. Average of 213ppkg. 
Mediums (1542) to 249ppkg from Lythwood Sheep Ltd. Others to 246ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Average of 236ppkg. 
Heavies (981) to 246ppkg from I P Jones Penygraig. Others to 239ppkg from CJ & LM Davies Lawns Farm. Average of 226ppkg.
Over Weights (481) to 217ppkg from Probert and Probert Lower Hill. Others to214ppkg from Lythwood Sheep Ltd. Average of 203ppkg.
 
CULL EWE (1751)
A slightly reduced number of 1751 Cull Sheep on offer, selling to a very good average of £76.20 for the ewes and £95.74 for the cull rams. Ewes topped the market at £144 per head from E H Pennie & Son Gwern y Ychain on three occasions. J W Davies & Sons Tynybryniau sold ewes to £139 per head. Rams topped at £127 from HG & IW Rees Faidre Fach.
 
STORE SHEEP
Couples
A fantastic entry of 832 couples entered the market this week selling to a strong average of £141.27. The trade wasn’t quite as sharp as last week, due to the supply and the weather conditions reducing the grass. 2 year old ewes with twins at foot topped the sale at £202.00 from Mrs G Napper Brynteg Penygarnedd. The majority of the ewes where aged, with single lambs at foot sold to an average of £118 and twins at foot sold to average £143 from T Jones Pengraig Ystrad Meurig. A large entry of hoggs with lambs at foot. Singles were up to £192 from MJ & JM Price Penycraig Farm Llanafan. With a smashing pen of Texel hoggs with single strong lambs sold to £200 from M S Williams Penrhos Farm. Sale to Commence at 10.30am next week with a special show and prize sale of Couples.
Cade Lambs   
A reduced entry of 32 cade lambs were offered for sale this week selling to an average of £13.13. The sale was topped by a strong Texel lamb selling to £25 ffrom A T Williams Pantllwyn Sarn.
 
COWS & CALVES
Cows and Calves met with an improved trade, however buyers were a little cautious with their choice. Top price of the day was £1620 for a Belgian Bluex 1st Calver with a Limousinx bull Calf presented by P Lloyd Gwastad Guilsfield. From the same home was a similar outfit with a heifer calf which made £1580. D P Evans Moelygarth sold a Limousinx 1st calver with a bull calf for £1610. Other similar outfits from the same home sold from £1400 - £1580. Herefordx 1st calvers with Limousinx heifer calves made £1230. H P Price Woodlands Farm, Bicton sold two Belgian Bluex 1st Calvers one with a bull calf and one with a heifer for £1400 and £1340 respectively. Two Herefordx 1st calvers with Limousinx heifer calves from MA & LJ Morris Maesyrabad Pool Quay made £1260 and £1310. N Evans & Co Tynycelyn, Pont Robert sold two Simmentalx 1st calvers with Limousin Bull calves at foot for £1220 and £1360. A Belgian Bluex 2nd calver with a Limousin bull calf from B G Jones Gethin Waen made £1310. A pedigree Limousin Bull from F A Lloyd Bedwgwilym sold for £3500. A breakdown of the prices achieved where as follows:
£1600 + 2 lots, £1500 - £1600 3 lots, £1400 - £1500 2 lots, £1300 - £1400 8 lots, £1200 - £1300 7 lots, £1100 - £1200 4 lots, 1000 -£1100 3 lots, less than 3 lots.
