Welshpool is looking for Street Champions, but don’t bother applying if you are merely a curtain twitcher!
The scheme, revealed by mywelshpool in January, has now been approved by Welshpool Town Council as part of its ‘Welshpool Pride’ initiative which was created as a result of the recent Public Consultation held with the town’s residents.
That consultation showed overwhelming support for the town to be tidied up and addressed everything from litter, dog poo and street lights to anti-social behavior and underage drinking.
And the Street Champions scheme will be pivotal to its success with an army of volunteers recruited to simply keep an eye on their patch. But, the council stressed, it is not the reincarnation of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
“We are looking for people who really care about where they live,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “This is a vital part of the Community Plan. We want to instil a community spirit and ensure that these problems are communicated through the right channels. A Street Champion will be responsible for ensuring problems on their particular street or area are addressed. We are not asking them to spy on people.”
If you want to be a Street Champion, email the Town Council on
wtcouncil@btinternet.com. All Street Champions will be required to undergo a CRB check.
