Powys County Council and Freedom Leisure have re-confirmed this afternoon that the artificial pitch at The Flash Leisure Centre won’t be reopening any time soon.
The much-maligned pitch has been closed since October 28 due to persistent flooding causing significant damage to the surface by water and debris. This is as a result of a failed surface water drainage system located on land adjacent.
It had been hoped to re-open the facility quickly after cleaning and repairs had been carried out but an inspection on November 25 revealed irrevocable damage to the sand bed which has compromised its use and safety.
“Detailed investigative work surrounding the artificial pitch at the Flash Leisure Centre and adjacent sites in Welshpool is needed to reduce any future flood risk and before further repairs can start,” the two organisations said in a joint statement.
“The organisations will continue to work together to identify a suitable solution and will provide further updates in January 2020.
“We apologise to all users of the pitch for this closure and the inconvenience of this. However, we are doing all that we can to keep the length of closure to a minimum.
“Regular users have been informed of the closure and we will provide regular updates on the project. Once work is complete, we are confident that the facility will be open to the community all year round.”
