Council vows to sort flooded lane

Powys County Council is set for an ear bashing from Guilsfield Community Council after lanes around the village became impassable following recent downpours.

After last week’s rain, narrow, but busy, lanes (pictured) that service the hamlets and outlying estates around one of Wales’s biggest villages have been under knee-deep water.

One of those, Varchoel Lane, became impassable with villagers saying that they have never known flooding like it.

“We’ve had enough now,” one councillor told us following their recent meeting. “It is really getting ridiculous. It is causing a huge problem for both residents and businesses alike as these lanes are very well used.

“The lanes are in such a sorry state with deepening pot holes already an issue. This is a priority that we are pushing Powys County Council on.”

But Powys County Council has pinpointed the problem and said it will be addressed this week.

“We are aware of a flooding problem on Varchoel Lane, Guilsfield. A highway drain has been damaged and, as a result, surface water is backing up on the county road,” a spokesperson told us this morning.

“Our highways operatives will be attending the site this week to repair the damage.”
