Don’t expect rail shambles to end soon

In a week when the local railway service appears to have hit new lows, there is a warning from the Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth Rail Liaison Committee that it won’t get better any time soon.

Staff shortages and illnesses have been among the excuses used by Transport for Wales (TfW) to explain their dreadful service which has seen them cancel a number of trains, with many more running late.

TfW took on the contract last year and told users that there was likely to be lots more pain before we saw any gain, but over a year on and things seem to be getting worse.

The new timetable was introduced on Sunday with more trains, but ironically there seems to be less running due to cancellations.

And last night former Welshpool Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, shared some devastating news for local rail users in his capacity as a spokesperson for the Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth Rail Liaison Committee.

“TFW have confirmed today that things are not likely to improve before the New Year,” he said. “This is due to a shortage of crews. However, they are working towards improvements in January 2020. There are replacement bus services where possible to help when trains are cancelled.”

TfW has apologised for the problems but thanked workers who gave up rest days or volunteered to work overtime to avoid even more cancellations.
