Flash under fire once again

Freedom Leisure, the management company that runs The Flash, is under-fire once again for increasing its sports hall rental prices by a jaw-dropping 25%.

Users have been told that from January 1, it will cost a whopping £40 for just 40 minutes hire (up from £32), and it follows hot on the heels of their price hike for children’s swimming lessons which caused a stir earlier in the month.

To make matters worse, the outside artificial pitch is still out of order and plans to reintroduce the indoor hall at The Armoury have been cancelled due to the Town Council giving the building away for free to a charity, ending decades of it being a popular health and fitness centre.

It leaves no option for sports clubs, and users say it gives Freedom Leisure license to charge what they want.

“It is getting ridiculous now,” said Welshpool Town Chairman, Chris Roberts, who also hires the hall for his work colleagues at Castalum to play their weekly five-a-side.

“I just can’t believe it because the facilities are getting worse down there, so they can’t justify such an increase. Like the swimming, we don’t have any other option in the town so they expect people will just pay it.

“We’ve been using the facility for about 10 years so to be hit with a 25% increase is a disgrace.”

Chris was only told this week that it would be going up tomorrow (Wednesday), meaning he would be unable to cancel his monthly booking because he has to give eight days’ notice.

We’ve contacted Freedom Leisure to ask for their reasoning behind the rise, but have yet to hear back.
