Oil tanker road crash causes river drama

Fire fighters teamed up with the Environmental Agency this weekend to stop a potentially dangerous diesel leak reaching a major waterway following a road crash.

The drama started at 4.30pm on Friday afternoon when reports were made of a smash between a Land Rover and an oil tanker carrying 3,000 litres of red diesel.

It appears no-one was injured in the accident close to Llanfair Caereinion, but it became apparent that an environmental problem was taking shape with the diesel leaking into the nearby brook which feeds into the Banwy.

A fire spokesperson said: “The team had to react quickly and deployed booming equipment along with absorbent granules to try and stop the initial spread of the diesel. The crew then handed over to Environmental Agency who continued with the clean up operation.

An agency spokeswoman confirmed some red diesel - a form of diesel used for non road vehicles - had entered a tributary and added that “the main job is to ensure it doesn’t go into the main rivers”.
