The famous Knife Angel has arrived in Newtown ahead of Saturday's official welcome to the town.

The sculpture, designed by artist Alfie Bradley and made at the British Ironworks Centre near Oswestry, is making its first visit to Wales as part of a campaign to raise awareness of anti-violence and knife crime.

It followed a campaign to have the sculpture in Newtown by Powys county councillor Joy Jones. It gained the support of Dyfed Powys Police Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn and Dyfed Powys Police, as well as others.

Today(Saturday) a formal ceremony will be held around the Angel, which is sited outside the Oriel Davies Gallery in Back Lane.

A lorry carrying it erected the Knife Angel by crane.

Cllr Jones said: “The British Ironwork Centre, along with  the artist Alfie Bradley created this important piece to help raise awareness and support anti-violence of all kinds,” she added. “Powys is the first county in Wales to have a visit from the Knife Angel

“It will be here for the month of January giving people time to visit and appreciate the work that has gone into the monument and understand the message it bring of anti-violence

“There will be various education events supporting the visit along with many organisations who are getting involved in this special visit.

Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn and the Leader of Powys County Councillor Cllr Rosemarie Harris will join Cllr Jones, along with other guests including the Mayor, Cllr David Selby, for a ceremony at 12pm on Saturday.
