Public tip-off snares second thief

09/05/2011 @ 02:22

Just a month after public support helped to nab a manhole cover thief last month, police have praised another local resident whose tip-off has led to a second arrest.

The resident visited Welshpool Police Station after becoming suspicious of several men. Their van registration number was noted and handed to police who caught up with them later in the day.

A police spokesperson takes up the story:

“After speaking to the occupants, a search was completed of the vehicle and some stolen covers were found in the rear of the van. A 21 year-old male was then arrested for the theft of these items which he later admitted stealing.

“This is another example of the excellent assistance provided by members of the community to Welshpool Police. The prompt action by the witness detected this theft and very likely prevented other similar thefts taking place.”

Police say the thief was not local and probably a “travelling criminal”. It follows a similar situation last month when a tip-off led to the arrest of an Oswestry youth for stealing manhole covers in Guilsfield.
