Farewell Dennis!

Storm Dennis may have left us, but the Welshpool area will be feeling its impact for some days to come as flood waters start to recede.

Roads to Shrewsbury, Newtown and Llanfair Caereinion were back open through the night but problems are still reported on the road to Arddleen, with motorists advised to travel through Guilsfield to reach Oswestry, as Llanymynech is now clear.

The depth of water at Llandrinio Bridge was close to breaking its Year 2000 record of more than seven metres last night. Rail services to and from Shrewsbury are expected to return to normal later today.

Fire fighters were once again called out to rescue stranded motorists with a spokesperson for Montgomery station saying that they were called out with the specialist swift water rescue team from Welshpool. They commented: “Please don’t proceed through road closed signs, they are put out for good reason!”

As the clean-up continues, residents, particularly those close to waterways, will be keeping an eye on two further named storms that are brewing in the Atlantic.

Rain is forecast for much of Monday, so the chance of more flooding is not ruled out.
