£200k to save ‘Rodney’

21/02/2020 @ 01:14

One of our most outstanding landmarks is in danger of falling down unless up to £200,000 can be raised to secure its long term future.

Rodney’s Pillar has been providing a welcome to the Severn Valley since 1782 when it was erected to commemorate the naval victories of Sir George Brydges Rodney, Admiral of the White.

But time has caught up with the Grade II listed monument which has become a popular destination for walkers. It is in desperate need of repair with an outward bulge forming on the side of the pillar, approximately a third of the way up, with vertical cracks and small holes forming.

Without structural repairs that could cost up to £200,000, the pillar is in danger of falling down.

But community spirit has come to the fore with a new charity – Save Rodney’s Pillar – forming to ensure Rodney can be enjoyed for generations to come.

“Following a very successful first open meeting since setting up the Charity, we have split responsibilities among the Trustees,” said spokesperson Bill Lee.

“It was good to see so many people interested in saving “The Pillar” and a lot of great suggestions. We will be looking at large amounts of funding from the likes of National Lottery etc. but we will need to show the interest is there for the pillar to be saved.

“This will be in various ways but mainly by the local fund raising that is carried out. To that end we need people to help and arrange fundraising events in their area.”

Bill is calling for an open meeting to be held in Welshpool to gauge interest and to share ideas for fundraising events and urged anyone who would like to organise it to get in touch.
