More livestock make it to market

Welshpool Livestock Sales report on their sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (30)

It was good to see a larger number of OTM cattle on offer this week, seeing a top price of £1,065 (144ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 740kg from RE & EJ Rowlands, Tycam. The same homemade 140ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 630kg making £882. Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £920.95 (113ppkg) for a Simmental x weighing 815kg from GW Jones, Graig Fach.   EE & MJ Jones & Sons, Cwmbychan made 155ppkg for a cow weighing 550kg making £852.50. Bulls under 72 months topped at £858 (156ppkg) for a Limousin bull weighing 550kg from S Richards & Son, Gwern Y Pwll. Numbers need each week to meet demand.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (25) 122.49ppkg / £811.53

Cows 48-72 Months (4) 135.45ppkg / £800.86

Bulls Under 72 months (1) 156ppkg / £858

PRIME LAMBS (915)

A larger entry of lambs forward this week sold to return an average of 229.52ppkg, with a top price of 267ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 39kg making £ from MG & MN Hanselman, Knapps Farm, and £107/head for 42.5kg lambs from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage.

More spring lambs now forward sold to a steadier trade. Lighter weight lambs were in most demand due to the lack of numbers of smaller weight hoggs forward. As with hoggs heavier weight spring lambs are in less demand.

Lights (54) to 259ppkg from D & S Jones, Brynglas Bach. Others to 250ppkg from DC Jerman, Ty Gwellt. Average of 244.81ppkg.

Standards (258) to 267ppkg from MG & MN Hanselman, Knapps Farm. Others to 254ppkg from HR Bason & EJ Tuffin, Crow Wood. Average of 230.53ppkg.

Mediums (583) to 252ppkg from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage. Others to 250ppkg from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage.  Average of 228.08ppkg.

Heavies (18) to 221ppkg from AL & RA Powell, Todleth Farm. Others to 214ppkg from ME Jones & Son, Penalltgwin. Average of 211.48ppkg.

PRIME HOGGS (3465)

A smaller entry of hoggs forward this week sold to return an average of 207.46ppkg, with a top price of 242ppkg for pen of hoggs weighing 46kg making £111.50 from Lythwood Sheep.

Less hoggs forward this week saw a steadier trade than last week, with lighter and medium weight hoggs up to 46kilos selling to a good competitive trade but heavier weight hoggs again proving difficult to sell due to the lack of demand from the catering outlets due to covid19. Heavy weight hoggs (above 48 kilos) generally sold around the £90 -£95 per head price, the bigger they are, the harder they are to sell.

Lights (177) to 225ppkg from IR Williams, Coed Y Gweddill. Others to 219ppkg from AD Jones, Lawnt. Average of 213.06ppkg.

Standards (470) to 231ppkg from JA Wood & Sons, Kinnerton. Others to 221ppkg from WR & DA Evans, Brwyn. Average of 201.54ppkg.

Mediums (1675) to 239ppkg from JR & JPR Andrew, Bronheulog. Others to 238ppkg from AS Hopley, Kingsleigh.  Average of 208.49ppkg.

Heavies (758) to 242ppkg from Lythwood Sheep. Others to 228ppkg from the same vendor. Average of 197.62ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1839)

A similar number of ewes forward again this week met a steadier trade, but yet again a good average of £64.98 was achieved. Top price of the day was achieved by WRP Jones, Pant that sold ewes for £133, with several others in this run selling for £100 plus. Others to £129 from EE Powell & Son, Cil Pentre.

A small entry of 33 rams forward this week averaged £64.24 and sold to £100 from E Jones, Cefn Coch Isaf and JM & JG Shearer, Cochsidan.
