Two men have been detained by police following what eye witnesses described as a “terrifying incident” with at least one of them allegedly armed with a handgun.

Dyfed-Powys Police has confirmed that the two men were apprehended on the top of Church Street close to Salop Road earlier this evening by off-duty officers and detained until uniformed colleagues arrived.

A police spokesperson said: “Off duty officers dynamically responded to a situation and arrested two men who were detained until the arrival of colleagues. The men remain in custody at Newtown Police Station and will be interviewed tomorrow (Thursday).”

The spokesperson did not confirm the presence of the handgun but our eye witness said she was “100 per cent certain” she saw it in the possession of one of the men and seized by officers during a frantic struggle on the street.
