Welsh golf courses can open Monday

Local golf courses like Welshpool and Newtown have been given the green light to reopen from Monday, but Wales Golf is advising them not to rush into a decision.

In an update issued today, the sport’s governing body in Wales said that “following recent Welsh Government announcements and the revision of certain Covid-19 related restrictions golf clubs are permitted to open if they so wish”.

But the statement goes on to say that “it is entirely at each golf club’s discretion as to whether they choose to open and if so when they choose to do so”.

“We would advise that clubs that do wish to re-open do not do so immediately so as to ensure they have sufficient protocols in place to adhere to these guidelines, which we will be on hand to assist with.

“This would allow for a managed and co-ordinated reintroduction of golf across Wales from next Monday (May 18) at the earliest.”

The announcement follows confusion in the aftermath of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s update to ease English restrictions, including permission to play golf with just one person that is not from your household from tomorrow.

It left Llanymynech Golf Club in the lurch on the border with many of its holes located in Wales.

Today, the BBC published snippets of a club statement by the secretary of the club which states it will reopen on Wednesday, when all greens - in both Wales and England - will be playable. The club will operate restricted hours (08:00-17:00 BST) and the club house will not reopen.

The club had expressed disappointment at “conflicting guidelines that hinder practical compliance by all of the public within the border areas”.

The statement adds that, like many golf clubs around the UK, closure has put them in a precarious financial position.

It also points out that the club is affiliated to the Shropshire and Herefordshire Union of Golf clubs and the English Golf Union and therefore intends to follow their guidelines agreed with the (Westminster) Government to “allow a limited amount of golf to be played in a controlled and safe manner”.
