65 Powys deaths linked to Covid-19

The confusion over the correct Covid-19 data for Powys continues after the Office for National Statistics (OSN) confirmed last night that 65 Powys residents had sadly died with suspected or confirmed Covid-19.

The number is in stark contrast to the 12 deaths in total that were reported for Powys by the health board on the same day, with a huge question mark also next to the number of positive cases recorded for Powys residents.

The OSN statistic consists of those who have Covid-19 mentioned on their death certificate, however it has also been revealed that some may not have even been tested. It also includes those who have passed away in English hospitals, a number not currently included on the PTHB statistics.

The lack of cross-border reporting also casts doubt that the small figure of 216 positive cases is an accurate position for Powys, with the exact figure likely to be higher.

“The latest information (May 12) from Public Health Wales indicates 216 positive test results for Powys residents based on tests undertaken in Wales,” said a PTHB spokesperson this morning.

“This only reflects people who have been tested in line with the Welsh Government's testing strategy, and the figure will be slightly higher if tests in England (e.g. hospital patients) are also included.”

There has also been a shortage of testing in Powys with only 886 carried out since the start of the pandemic. This week a mobile unit, operated by the army, has been launched to try and ramp up the figures. Health chiefs have also been reluctant to release figures for those who have recovered.
