So far, so good

The roads may seem busier, but local police didn’t issue any Covid-19 fines for non-essential travel from their check point on the Newtown road yesterday.

As Montgomeryshire senior figures, including MP Craig Williams and the Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn, reiterated the Welsh ‘Stay Home’ message, there were fears that we may see the early signs of English day trippers following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s lifting of travel restrictions on the other side of the border.

But local law enforcement praised the attitude of motorists last night with the Newtown Roads Policing Unit stating: “Another busy day carrying out essential travel checks. Very busy on the roads today but all checked were making essential journeys. Thank you for your support.”

Those comments were backed up by the Newtown police officers who supported and added: “Police action was very well received with many thankful for our presence. Thank you all for complying with regulation.”

Meanwhile, with another Bank Holiday approaching, there are calls to increase the £60 fine for motorists taking non-essential journeys.

Welsh Economy Minister Ken Skates said the police are doing an incredible job and if further support and powers are needed then that will be supported.
