Community Angels welcome donations of over £5,000

Over £5,000 in donations have been handed to the Welshpool Community Angels group which was formed to support isolating and vulnerable residents during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The volunteer group has also been inundated with donations of foodstuff, supplies of PPE and sanitiser and other goods.

“As organisers of this group we are overwhelmed by this generosity and want to assure everyone that their generous donations are being used sensibly,” said Powys County Councillor Graham Breeze.

“Apart from individual donations we have received grants of £500 from both PAVO and Tesco – money which will be invaluable as we face a long battle against this terrible pandemic.

“We have linked closely to the Welshpool Town Council run Meals on Wheels service and helped increase numbers delivered from less than 10 per day to around 50 – that’s a hot two-course meal delivered to doors.

“Thanks to donations all our volunteers out delivering meals are fully equipped with PPE to help keep them and residents safe,” he added.

“Our volunteers are out on a daily basis delivering shopping, prescriptions and any other emergency products to those forced to stay at home during this difficult period.”

The organising group which also incudes Rev Steve Willson, Interin Town Clerk Anne Wilson, Town Councillor Nicola Morris and John Morgan has confirmed that £1,000 has been committed to help keep the Meals on Wheels service running and a further £2,000 will go to providing gifts of additional food parcels for the vulnerable in the Welshpool community who are unable to leave their homes.

“We remain for ever grateful to the army of volunteers who for coming forward to answer the call for support and to the staff at Welshpool Town Council for going the extra mile to keep the isolated and vulnerable people of Welshpool safe,” said Councillor Breeze.
