‘Stay off the playing fields’

Sports clubs in Welshpool and Guilsfield have made a plea for rogue dog walkers to stay off playing fields after a surge in dog mess over the past week.

The issue was highlighted by Welshpool Rugby Club yesterday who discovered their pitches were littered in dog mess, and down the road in Guilsfield, a camera has been fitted after five lots were left over a 24-hour period there on Friday.

“Today we have found several mounds of dog mess on both our first and second pitches,” said a spokesperson for the rugby club.

“Please do not walk your dogs on these playing surfaces. We are not in lockdown forever and soon enough people will be running around on these fields enjoying sport again. Clean it up or better still, go somewhere that dog walking is permitted and people don’t play sport.”

Guilsfield Community Council has installed new signage after an increase in dog walkers was reported on the school fields. As a result, one entrance has no less than four signs stating that dogs are not allowed in the area. However, the problem has not gone away.

“It is disgusting this week,” said a Guilsfield Cricket Club spokesperson. “We’ve been left with no choice but to try and catch them at it now with the camera in place. It seems some people can’t read very simple signs that dogs aren’t allowed on there at all.”
