The search for fugitive bank robbers who carried out a snatch raid on Barclays, Machynlleth, yesterday has taken another dramatic twist.

Earlier today a reliable source tipped us off that police had caught the two men who evaded a massive manhunt yesterday, joining the third man in custody who was snared by officers sweeping the Rhallt countryside, north of Welshpool, in the afternoon.

But police have maintained their appeal for witnesses and information throughout and it has just been confirmed that the two wanted men are not among the three reported to be in custody. The helicopter has once again been scrambled this lunchtime and a heavy police presence is in the town.

Detective Chief Inspector Shane Williams said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw these two men (smartly dressed, white and in their mid-20s) in the vicinity of the Flash Leisure Centre and Gungrog Hill in Welshpool between 12.30-5pm on Thursday to come forward and contact police on 101.”

The drama started shortly before midday when the robbery took place and the three men fled in a BMW. That was exchanged for a Mercedes before the chase continued on foot when the car was abandoned at the Flash Leisure Centre.

The search soon centred on the Rhallt with up to 30 officers sweeping a huge area of forest land and countryside in pursuit of the fugitives. One was caught but the other two appear to have slipped through the net.

The reports of the two arrests this morning were not official and did not come from the police but through a credible source who has confirmed they are still in custody in connection with the investigation but the two wanted bank robbers remain at large.
