Deer park to reopen with strict no dogs’ policy

Powis Estates has announced that it will be reopening its Deer Park to walkers from Saturday, but the strict no dogs’ policy is in place.

The gates were closed to the grounds surrounding the magnificent Powis Castle, which will also reopen its courtyard and garden next weekend, at the start of the pandemic, but the private parkland will allow access via the tarmac path only once again.

Prior to lockdown, there were increased reports of dogs worrying the herds of wild red and fallow deer that roam freely, so the message is clear from Powis Estates to leave the pets at home.

Jack Tavernor, Estate Manager for Powis Estates, said: “One dog may not be an issue but it is a cumulative effect. We have to protect the deer for the sake of everyone who wishes to visit and enjoy this private parkland. Please respect the wishes of the estate, respect the deer and don’t risk one individual’s actions from potentially free access being removed from the wider public altogether.”

Jack also stressed that visitors must stay on the paved road as “the deer need sanctity for stress-free peace and quiet”.

“Members of the public should not wander off this road for any reason,” he said. “There have been problems with trespass and antisocial behaviour in other parts of the park in the past and this simply isn’t acceptable.”

Powis Estates, in partnership with Welshpool Town Council, allows dog owners to exercise their dogs with permissive access throughout the Lower Park which is accessed by the pedestrian gate at Park Lane in Welshpool.

While Powis Estates own the Deer Park, The National Trust owns Powis Castle and Gardens and their dog policies are available online.
