Planners react to market parking dilemma

23/05/2011 @ 05:24

Welshpool Town Council says it has listened to the concerns of disabled residents who were not impressed to find the new Monday Market had been plonked on their parking bays.

Weekend media reported that disabled residents were criticising the planners for the lack of consideration in locating the three stalls currently trading outdoors once a week.

But the council now says it has reacted after realising the initial decision was wrong and says their concession highlights the fact that they listen to residents.

“We had to produce a risk assessment and management plan which had to be approved by Powys County Council with a restriction that we could not park cars between stalls,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “It is for that reason that the disabled bay was taken out.

“However, Powys is happy that we open the bay with proper protection for the stalls until the market grows and needs the space. From today (Monday) the space was re-opened and the stalls moved up the street half a bay beyond the disabled space in question.”
