Archaeologists heading back to Beacon Ring

The bid to uncover the secrets held for centuries at one of the Welshpool area’s most intriguing sites will continue this summer.

The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT) has confirmed that its experts will be returning to the former hillfort that overlooks Welshpool from Long Mountain next month and, despite Covid-19 restrictions, members of the public will be able to monitor progress for themselves.

“We’re thrilled to announce our summer excavation fieldwork project at Beacon Ring!” said a spokesperson. “From August 10-21, our archaeologists will be back on site at the Hillfort.”

The site has been researched, surveyed, and excavated by CPAT for several years (pictured) - making it one of the most extensively studied hillforts in the region.

Several interesting discoveries have been made, but each one has only made CPAT want to go back for more.

There will also be open days on August 22 and 23 for members of the public to view progress, but access will be limited and due to social distancing guidelines and safety measures, there will not be a minibus service for the guided walks.

“We have will have a map soon with areas highlighted where limited parking is available – and some walking routes up to the site,” the spokespserson added. “There is a small parking site available for visitors who have limited mobility – these spaces need to be booked in advance and are available during the Open Day only. Please email community@cpat.org.uk to request a space.”
