New hotel plans withdrawn after objections

Plans for a new 63-bed hotel and drive-through national chain coffee shop at the Buttington Roundabout have been withdrawn.

Plans by KIM Property Investments Ltd for the major hospitality development for the edge of town had been submitted to Powys County Council but have been withdrawn following a number of objections.

Welsh Government Highways has asked for more information on whether the A483 junction had the capacity for the additional traffic and needs a transport statement, while widespread ecology concerns were highlighted by Powys County Council due to its proximity to the canal and dozens of protected species.

Welshpool Town Council's planning committee listed 10 points of concern to the Moors straight plan, and also said that a hotel should be built in the town centre, and not on the outskirts.

The Clwyd Powys Agricultural trust has also raised issues about the Lime Kilns, saying that the layout would need to be "significantly revised to completely avoid the listed structure".

One observer familiar with the project told us: "They will either have a re-think and do all the work needed on the assessments and reports which will cost a lot of money, or look for somewhere else with less problems to overcome."

The area, on the edge of town, is set to undergo major transformation in the coming year or so with a McDonald’s set to join the recently-erected garage and other businesses that have been given the green light. Planners will now wait and see whether the biggest plans of them all will be resubmitted at a later date.
