A group of secondary school pupils from across Powys will be encouraging their classmates to take part in sporting activities in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Twenty six pupils have become silver ambassadors to promote sports to children within their schools.
The initiative is part of the Young Ambassador Movement which is aiming to empower and inspire young people to become role models and leaders through sport, by developing their confidence and skills in order to increase physical activity participation in others. It will recognise and reward committed young sports leaders in Powys schools and communities with further training and opportunities.
Each secondary school in the county has nominated two pupils as silver ambassadors, who will also be referred to as adiStar leaders. They have started promoting sport and encouraging pupils to take part in sporting activities this term.
Last month, they attended an adiStar training day in Llandrindod Wells to prepare them for their new role, which was organised by Powys’ three gold young ambassadors.
James Davies and Nia Breeze from Llanfyllin High School were among those selected as gold ambassadors and will be supported the silver ambassadors. They arranged for Welsh badminton player Martyn Lewis and Gwennan Harries, Ambassador for Women’s Football, to attend the training day and meet pupils from the school.
