Health Minister to review Welshpool data

08/09/2020 @ 04:17

Welsh Government Health Minister, Vaughan Gething, said that the situation in Welshpool is being monitored following a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases over the weekend.

The Minister said that a local lockdown is unlikely as the outbreak is centred at CDT Sidoli Ltd in the town, with most of the 26 cases thought to be from the popular dessert maker’s staff.

However, he said “I wouldn't rule it out” when addressing the situation this afternoon.

Mr Gething said: “We've seen a spike that is largely around an individual business. And so we're doing lots of testing within that workforce. And that's driving the numbers in Powys.

“Powys, as you know, is a large rural county, so not a big population. So a few dozen extra cases, within a concentrated period of time, we'll see those numbers per hundred thousand go significantly up.

“But it's a matter where we’re able to isolate matters as a cluster that we understand and it’s not in community transmission. That's in direct contrast to the community transmission. We are now seeing with it within Caerphilly and that underpins the measures we've taken there.”

He went on to say that a lockdown was not being considered at present but “we review the data and the information coming through all the time, so I wouldn't rule it out”.

“Our preference is that people follow the rules,” he said. “Follow the social distancing guidelines. Don't see lots of people in your own home. Don't go to pubs and restaurants mixing with lots of different people.

“That's how we're going to see a return of Coronavirus in much larger numbers but we will, as I said before, look at the information, try to understand what's happening with the information given to our NHS test trace and protect service and if we do need to take further measures, then we won't hesitate to do so to help keep well safe.”
