Volunteer Community Angels needed

23/09/2020 @ 10:27

With Covid-19 restrictions increasing a Welshpool support group is appealing for more volunteers to help residents.

The Welshpool Community Angels Group has been supporting isolating residents since March with meals on wheels, essential shopping, prescription collection, dog walking or just a friendly chat.

The group has had volunteers covering all areas of the town since lockdown began in March but with many returning to work numbers have been dwindling.

Powys County Councillor Graham Breeze (pictured), one of the administrators of the group, said: “There was a tremendous response to our call for support from members of the Welshpool community and they have all done a fantastic job keeping people safe and well during this unprecedented time.

“But as the need reduced so has the number of volunteers with many returning to work or college.

“Now as Covid-19 cases increase across the country we have recognised the need to attract new recruits to prepare for any further lockdown situations.

“It doesn’t matter how much time people have to give. Some will simply collect the odd prescription, walk a dog, do essential shopping or simply check a neighbour is safe and well,” added Councillor Breeze.

“We had an amazing response when we first got together and at one stage had over 100 volunteers on stand-by. Angels have also helped support Welshpool Town Council’s valuable meals on wheels service and generous donations from businesses and individuals have proved invaluable.

“We are asking for anyone who thinks they can support the group in any way possible to contact us. Hopefully they will never be called on but we must be prepared for the situation to worsen as the winter months approach.”

Anyone who would like to help should contact the group by email at Welshpoolangels@gmail.com or through Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Welshpoolcommunityangels/
