Carnival "biggest in living memory" claim

31/05/2011 @ 05:24

One of the organisers of the Welshpool Carnival has hailed its procession as the “biggest in living memory”.

Bank Holiday Monday marked the first time that the procession has run through the one-way system, reversing its usual route, with councillors marshalling the way with the support from volunteers.

And it appears to have gone down well, according to the Town Clerk.

“It was a wonderful day,” said Robert Robinson. “I am told that the Carnival procession was the biggest in living memory. We had the carnival queens, floats of the ascot ladies, Mr Men, pylons-theme and others.”

Among the walkers in Fancy Dress was Cllr Alan Crowe dressed as ‘Miss Welshpool’ Cllr Anne Holloway! A samba band kept the crowds entertained outside the Royal Oak. A circus with animals also ensured there was a long tail to the procession.

“The procession was so long that it was coming along Church Street to the traffic lights just as the last float was entering Broad Street!” said Mr Robinson. “The traffic control was done by the Council with councillors and volunteers used as marshals. It worked well and traffic disruption was kept to a minimum.”

Another key official told mywelshpool that the crowd at Maesydre was down on previous years, but it was kept entertained by live music, a high wire display, dog displays and show, majorettes, stalls as well as a fairground.
