Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.
 
OTMS (67) 
An entry of 67 otm’s sold to average at 122ppkg for 60 cows, 145ppkg for 1 bull, 133ppkg for the 4 under 48 month old heifers and 153ppkg for the 1 under 48 month old steer. Cows topped at £1441.53 (171ppkg) per head for a British Blue cow weighing 843kg from J Thomas & Son Tan House. R A Owen Tynewydd presented a Charolais cow to £1360.12. R O Williams & Sons Caerddaniel sold two Charolais cows to £1269.99 and £1074.40. A Hereford heifer from R & J Bowker sold to £1003.80. The Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 goes to J Thomas & Sons Tan House for the highest prize older cow sold on the day.
   
FATCATTLE (8)
An entry of 8 fat cattle presented for sale. Heifers and Steers both averaged 178ppkg. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf sold four heifers to 189ppkg and 188ppkg which was bought by MJ Birtwistle & Co and 184ppkg was paid by Rikki Lloyd and 181ppkg went to Staffordshire Meat Packers. RB & JA Jones Wernddu sold three steers to 178ppkg, 174ppkg and 150ppkg. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf receives the Briarwood Products Ltd Prize of £25 for the highest price animal sold on the day.    
 
PRIME LAMBS (3871)
An entry of 3871 spring lambs, selling to an average of 234ppkg.
Super Lights (30) to 256ppkg from E L Evans & Co The Green. Average of 255ppkg. 
Lights (149) to 276ppkg from Mr Bound Caewaen. Others to 266ppkg from W I Ellis Talwrn. Average of 253ppkg.
Standards (1462) to 285ppkg from D C Jerman Tygwellt. Others to 266ppkg from Mr Bound Caewaen. Average of 236ppkg.
Mediums (2015) to 276ppkg from I W Richards Glanllyn. Others to 268ppkg from H Hughes & Son Hendy. Average of 231ppkg.
Heavy’s (167) to 238ppkg from A E Casewell Bodynfoel. Others to 235ppkg from T W G Davies Penygraig. Average of 217ppkg.

An entry of 550 Prime Hoggets, selling to an average of 196ppkg.

Standards (93) to 209ppkg from G Ratcliffe Whixall Hall. Others to 205ppkg from C T Gwilt Cwmcollo. Average of 190ppkg. 
Mediums (174) to 209ppkg from G Ratcliffe Whixall Hall. Others to 202ppkg from M P B Ashton Belanddu. Average of 201ppkg. 
Heavies (62) to 216ppkg from M P B Ashton Belanddu. Others to 205ppkg from J G Ellis & Son Tynewydd. Average of ppkg.
Over Weights (28) to 197ppkg from DA & MD Wright Heathmynd. Others to 188ppkg from WL & HA Williams Wynnora. Average of 163ppkg.
 
CULL EWE (2059)
A good entry of 2059 Cull sheep presented for sale. Ewes averaged £76.19 per head and cull rams £98.25 per head. E W Jones Gesail y Bryn sold ewes to £130 per head to top the market. M P B Ashton Belanddu and R J Lunt Planfa both presented ewes to £129 per head. Cull rams topped the market at £140 per head on two occasions from R A Meddins Hafod.  
 
STORE SHEEP
Couples
A smaller entry of ewes and lambs this week, selling to an average of £133.89. Three year old ewes with twin lambs at foot topped the sale at £205 from F Bailey Pensarn Swydd Ffynnon. Yearling ewes with twin lambs at foot reached £195 from E W Howells & Son Oakwood Llanfyllin. Two year old with single lambs at foot made up to £146.
The trade is remaining reasonably sharp considering the time of year. Numbers are reducing over the weeks. A Few aged ewes with lambs are expected next week, the sale will commence at 10.30am. 
Hoggs and Lambs
340 hoggs and lambs entered the market this week selling to a good average of £162.51. Hoggs and single lambs at foot sold to £185 from L D Bayliss Nantddu penybont. A pedigree texel hoogs with a Beltex x lamb at foot topped the sale at £210 from G L Jones Cefnrhosan. Hoggs with twins at foot made £210 ffrom E W Howells & Son Oakwood Llanfyllin.
The overall aveage for aged ewes and hoggs this week was £159.49. Again the trade is remaining reasonably sharp but towards the end of the sale this week it dropped slightly. Hoggs and lambs will be available next week with number expected to be reduced. The sale will commence after the aged ewes at approximately at 11am.
 
COWS & CALVES
Another excellent entry of 81 cows and calves met with a similar trade to the past few weeks. Top price was once again from BC & JW Evans who sold a Pure Bred Limousin with a Limousin bull calf for £2060. Two Limousinx 1st Calvers with heifer calves from the same home made £2050 and £2020. RE & CJ Davies Boycott Hall sold a Limousinx 1st calver with a bull calf for £1820 whilst two Belgian Bluex 1st calvers one with a bull and one with a heifer sold for £1600 a piece. D P Evans Moelygarth sold a Herefordx 1st calver with a Limousinx heifer calf from the same home sold for £1460. I & J Evans Llwynhywel Farm sold six Belgian Blue and Limousin cows with Belgian Bluex calves at foot from £1260 to £1580 to average £1455. C E Evans Lower Hendre Maesbury Marsh sold a Belgian Bluex 1st calver with a bull calf for £1460. Presented by I & DW Davies Gwernybwlch was a Belgian Blue 1st calver with a bull calf which made £1460. GM & DA Hughes & Son Lower Halton made £1500 for a Limousinx 1st calver with a heifer calf. Price and Price Cwmearl sold a Limousinx 1st calver with a Heifer calffor £1510. A special entry of 24 Limousinx Cows and Calves 2nd and 4th Calvers from PE & M Harris Talyrnau sold to a top of £1400 to average £1085 overall. A breakdown of the prices achieved where as follows. £2000 + 3 lots, £1800 - £2000 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 3 lots, £1400 - £1600 16 lots, £1200 - £1400 13 lots, £1000 - £1200 32 lots, Less than £1000 11 lots.

Welshpool Livestock Sales are delighted to report on excellent trade on the 311 cattle forward for their May Fair. With buyers from across the country, trade was even throughout with the best cattle very much in demand.
