‘We are not patrolling the border’
The force reacted angrily on Twitter to a Daily Mail report that claimed the three Welsh border police forces were trying to catch out motorists crossing into lockdown Wales since Friday’s new Covid-19 restrictions came into play.
In reaction to the newspaper’s story, Dyfed-Powys Police tweeted that it was not patrolling the border with England, but officers were out across the road network and in communities.
“Truth be told, we’re really hoping that we can all work together to do what we’ve been asked to do,” it added.
Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, added that officers would be engaging and educating the public in the first instance and enforcement would only happen at the “latter stage of that process”.
But he warned of growing discontent towards the strict rules.
“The public… I guess there's fatigue that has set in in relation to the rules and regulations. Which is why it’s really important we get the message out for people to take personal responsibility.”
Readers mentioned on social media over the weekend that police checks were being carried out close to Welshpool and Newtown, where previous checkpoints were set up during the last lockdown (pictured).
Despite being relatively free of Covid-19 for nearly a fortnight, the Welshpool area is in lockdown as part of a nationwide attempt to slow the spread of the virus from hotspots in north and south Wales.
The Welsh Government said it will remain in place as a ‘firebreak’ for three weekends, ending on November 9.
