Elwyn chosen as Plaid Cymru candidate

Powys County Councillor, Elwyn Vaughan, has the opportunity to put the disappointment of being withdrawn from the last UK General Election by fighting for the Montgomeryshire seat at the Welsh Government elections next year.

Plaid Cymru withdrew Cllr Vaughan from last year’s election, in a bid to encourage their voters to back the Liberal Democrat candidate to unseat the Conservatives.

The deal backfired, but Plaid Cymru, and Cllr Vaughan, hope to bounce back at May’s Senedd vote.

“Thank you for the support in being selected for Montgomeryshire and the Mid & West Wales list for Plaid Cymru,” he said.

“I want to be a positive voice for our rural communities. A strong voice right to Offa's Dyke; a voice for both non Welsh speakers and Welsh speakers alike and one that sees Montgomeryshire like a Celtic knot tying the rest of Wales together rather than be seen as a gap between North and South.”

Cllr Vaughan comes from an extensive farming family and as well as being a county councillor, he assists a mental health charity and is a director of a housing support charity in Newtown.

He added: “The work of such charities is of importance to me, because politics, at the end of the day, is about making things better within our communities, in implementing your values in a positive way.

“It'll be my privilege, with your support to do that, I ask all those with a commonality of mind and values to join with me in making the change in Montgomeryshire.”
