Owners of second homes or holiday homes in the Welshpool area could be paying twice the amount of council tax in future that regular home owners pay.
All residents are being given the opportunity to comment on the proposed hike, which currently stands at 150%, but is expected to rise to 175%, at least, with regulations allowing a doubling if approved by council.
Councillor Aled Davies, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “In a meeting on September 24, the Council considered a notice of motion to increase the Council Tax premium on periodically occupied properties to 75%.
“Through this consultation we are keen to understand the impact periodically occupied properties have within Powys communities with regards to tourism and the local economy, and the availability of affordable housing across the county.
“We are also interested in what the impact on the number of periodically occupied properties in Powys would be, if the premium were to increase.
“We welcome responses from both owners and the wider community so we can get a clear picture from across all our communities.”
To respond to the consultation, people can complete the online survey at https://haveyoursay.powys.gov.uk/.
The consultation will close on December 14.
