There were shocking scenes last night when Welshpool firefighters were attacked with fireworks whilst attending a blaze.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have condemned the attack which happened at around 5:25pm, when local firefighters were attending a blaze in the Welshpool area that was out of control.

Whilst dealing with the fire, the crew came under attack by fireworks. It is not clear exactly where the incident took place but it has been reported to the police.

Area Manager Simon Jenkins said: “I am saddened and appalled by this incident. Our firefighters have been attacked for only doing their job.

“Our firefighters are ready to respond at a moment’s notice and often place their lives at risk in order to save the lives of others and protect the communities that they serve.

“Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service takes a zero-tolerance approach to physical threats and attacks towards our staff and we are working with the police to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is asking communities to be vigilant and report any attacks to the Police or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111
