Council pledge to continue Meals on Wheels

Welshpool Town Council has pledged to continue its Meals on Wheels service, despite the closure of the Ann Holloway Day Centre where the service is based.

But it will require the support of more volunteers to help cook the meals five days a week and deliver them to the area’s elderly and vulnerable.

There was concern that the service may end with the closure of the centre, but the town council has been working with the Welshpool Community Angels, the voluntary group set up at the outset of Coronavirus in March, to find a solution.

“We are going to continue the provision of Meals on Wheels five days per week in the future,” said a town council spokesperson. “We have a regular clientele and are currently looking at provision over the Christmas period too.

“This is not just a Town Council service but is a major part of the Welshpool Community Angels who, alongside the meals, regularly provide help in the community for such areas as dog walking, prescription picking up and shopping.

“We have a cook in place and are looking for volunteers to assist with the cooking of the meals each day and also to deliver the meals around Welshpool and the surrounding areas. We have a meals on wheels car but if you volunteered and offered to use your own we would cover your car insurance and petrol costs for the days you deliver.

“We are hoping that alongside our existing volunteers that local people may be able to help us with the provision of the meals for the elderly and vulnerable in our town. DBS checks and taking a food hygiene course will be part of your volunteering and arranged through the Town Council.”

If you are able to assist, contact Kim Davies at the Town Council on 01938 553142 or  kimberley@welshpooltowncouncil.gov.uk.
