Powys gyms plea ignored by Welsh Government

17/12/2020 @ 10:19

The Welsh Government has ignored Powys County Council’s plea for gyms to be reclassified as an essential service so they can remain open throughout the upcoming lockdown.

First Minister Mark Drakeford (pictured) announced yesterday that tough Tier 4 lockdown rules will be enforced from December 28, meaning that Wales will almost come to standstill once again after Christmas.

It has frustrated so many industries, but particularly the leisure sector with gymnasiums seen as vital for both physical and mental well-being.

But, despite the Powys plea, the Welsh Government has gone ahead and will force them all to close.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said last night: “In November the county council approved a motion calling on the Welsh Government to re-classify gyms as an ‘essential service’ and wrote to the Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing and Welsh Language, Eluned Morgan.

“The council called on the government to re-classify gyms through future lockdowns in the interests of public’s physical and mental health.

“In response the Welsh Government acknowledged the importance of physical exercise on fitness and mental wellbeing and that any approach to Covid restrictions would continue to be cautious and based on the latest data and science relevant to Wales.

“Under the latest Welsh Government alert level system leisure and fitness facilities only close at level four – very high risk - the highest level in Wales.”
