Welshpool Covid cases on the rise again

23/12/2020 @ 01:07

After a relatively Covid-free few weeks, positive cases of the virus are on the rise once again in the Welshpool area.

Wales, as a whole, has one of the worst rates of rising cases relative to population in the world, but locally we have maintained our steadfast defence.

But it now appears that we are back in the fight following the latest figures released by Public Health Wales.

In today’s rolling seven-day figures covering tests between December 12-18, six new cases have been added in Welshpool alone, with the Montgomery, Trewern & Berriew zone moving up to 10.

The Guilsfield & Four Crosses area remains in the 0-2 bracket, but Llanfyllin & Llanwddyn has shifted up to five positive cases and the Llanfair Caereinion & Caersws zone is up to eight. The area classed as Abermule, Churchstoke and Kerry is up to six cases.

The previous week, all but the Llanfair area were in the 0-2 positive cases category which brought frustration when the Welsh nationwide lockdown was announced.

But these latest rises provide a reminder for us all to be on our guard, particularly with the areas on our doorstep covering Newtown and Machynlleth all reporting increases. Llanidloes is still the worst affected area in Montgomeryshire, but has come down steadily to 21 positive cases between December 12-18.

There is also immediate advice for those who were previously classed as ‘shielding’.

Dr Giri Shankar, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales (PHW), said: “Welsh Government has announced that the advice to those who are clinically extremely vulnerable, previously ‘shielding’ has changed.

“Those people within this group should no longer attend work outside the home. The safest option for people within this group is not to be part of a Christmas Bubble and to limit contact with other people over the festive period.”

He also warned that figures will not be updated on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
