Border golf club closed amidst Covid-19 confusion

Llanymynech Golf Club has been ordered to close by Powys County Council despite being registered in England.

The club straddles the border with most of the holes situated in Wales, causing confusion as to whether the club should be in the Welsh Alert Level  4 or the Shropshire Tier 3 which allows golf clubs to open. Even Tier 4 in England allows golf to be played.

But yesterday golfers were met by Dyfed-Powys Police on arrival who were enforcing the county council’s request for it to be closed for the time being until a final decision is made next week. The club pays its rates on the Powys side.

One golfer tweeted: “Today at Llanymynech Golf Club we were greeted by the Dyfed-Powys Police and Powys Council officials. We (were) all sent home in breach of Welsh legislation, the club is now closed until further notice, are we Welsh or English?”

Sian Whiteoak, club secretary, told the Shropshire Star: “Powys County Council have asked us to close for the time being. The police came in a supporting capacity. We’re still in discussion with everybody.

“Our governing body for golf is in England. Our club house has been closed since October. It’s one of those confusing situations because we are half and half (in Shropshire and Wales).”

MyWelshpool has contacted both the council and Dyfed-Powys Police for clarification.
