Council reiterates support for skatepark

Welshpool Town Council has again thrown its weight behind a new skatepark for the town, and has earmarked £10,000 towards the project for 2021.

The popular facility was closed down last summer due to immediate health and safety concerns, causing a backlash from residents who complained that it left the youngsters with few entertainment options in the town.

But at last night’s town council budget meeting, there was overwhelming support for the development of a new skatepark, however there are no solid plans in place, as yet.

“The kids of this town have nothing and when we come out of this pandemic they need somewhere to go,” said Cllr Steve Kaye.

However, questions were asked as to where the project stood and who else may be providing funding, but it was explained that the pandemic had slowed progress and discussions would be held with relevant stakeholders once conditions permitted.

At last night’s meeting, councillors agreed to keep their council tax precept the same for the coming financial year with an average band D property expected to contribute £218.67 towards the town council budget of £592,307 in 2021/22.
