Memories of Welshpool going global

01/04/2021 @ 10:05

A social media site shedding light on the Welshpool of yesteryear has built a global community, with more than 3,000 members from across the world.

Memories of Welshpool is the brainchild of local history enthusiast Alan Crowe and as part of the project, he has created a Facebook page full of pictures and videos of days gone by.

It has become one of the most active local pages throughout lockdown, and has attracted contributors from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Mexico and Canada.

“The social media side of the project continues to go from strength to strength with membership of the Facebook group passing the 3,000 mark last week,” said Mr Crowe.

The project’s YouTube channel has also taken off with 18 items of film loaded up with links shared to the Facebook page attracting over 13,000 views in one month.

“Anyone who has VHS or cine films of Welshpool-related events they would like to see on YouTube as part of the project should contact me on 07782166342,” said Mr Crowe, who added that he has the facility to view VHS tapes if people are unsure what’s on them.

“So many people in particular the elderly have said how much the project has benefitted them reminiscing over old photographs and films, recollecting memories of people and places long gone,” Mr Crowe added.

“In a rapidly changing world, we all must do everything that we can to preserve the social history of where we live.”
