Alison Davies elected as new Welshpool Mayor

It was somewhat chaotic, but Cllr Alison Davies was eventually voted in as the new Mayor of Welshpool by the narrowest of margins.

The vote was held last night due to the shock resignation of Cllr David Senior, who stood down as Mayor after just five months. He also quit as a town councillor, saying some fellow councillors were “more concerned with controlling every decision made by the council than they were about actually achieving anything positive for the town”.

But due to Covid restrictions, the meeting was held over Zoom with some councillors ringing in to the meeting. Cllr Davies (pictured) faced opposition from Cllr Hazel Evans with the first vote finishing 7-7.

However there was just one problem… there are only 13 voting councillors!

After some discussion, it was revealed that one of the phone voters also voted through the online poll so the re-vote showed 7-6 in Cllr Davies’s favour.

“I will do my utmost to work hard for the town and represent the town as well as possible over the coming year,” said Cllr Davies.

Her Deputy for the next year will be Cllr Carol Robinson who pipped Cllr Evans on another 7-6 vote.
